Project Description

Our work in prisons across the UK

The prison population in the UK is disproportionately affected by domestic abuse (a recent report from the Prison Reform Trust 1 found that 57% of women in prison have been the victims of domestic abuse), and even those whose sentences are unrelated to this violence have often felt its impact in some way, with almost one in three prisoners having experienced abuse as a child. – Ministry of Justice, 2012, “Prisoners’ Childhood and Family Backgrounds.

We want to stand alongside prisoners as they deal with their experiences of abuse, and so our prison work provides an opportunity for inmates to learn more about abuse, to consider how it may have affected them, and to offer them the chance to access help and support. We use real-life stories and interactive sessions, working alongside prison chaplains and other voluntary organisations to ensure prisoners receive the assistance they need, whenever they need it
